Wilma Smith, Yelian He and Yasmin Rowe unite as Rock Paper Scissors.

Coming from diverse multicultural backgrounds and generations, the unlikely liaison of these three multi-award-winning performers is melded together by pure musical chemistry and a love for the wide-ranging repertoire that exists for piano trio.

Brahms was a titan of composition, yet he felt like he could never escape from beneath Beethoven’s shadow. When critics jokingly labelled Brahm’s First Symphony ‘Beethoven’s 10th’, a symphony he took 22 years to complete, he was justifiably not amused. This concert showcases two of the finest and most well-known trio works of these two masters of western music, leaving the space for you to make up your own mind on the comparisons that can be drawn between them. As was the fashion of the day, Beethoven’s Variations for piano trio takes a popular theme from the opera and runs it through a kaleidoscope of new inventions. Brahms’s expansive Piano Trio No.1, one of his first published works, reveals, as Richard Specht puts it, ‘all the apprehension, pride, restraint and expectation of a soul in flower.’

From the boldness of Beethoven to the bashful brilliance of Brahms, this performance illuminates the passion and individuality that is prized in these two great masters.
